I Don't Trust You and You Shouldn't Trust Me

I Don't Trust You and You Shouldn't Trust Me

I think the hardest thing to learn is to keep your eyes off of people and keep them on Christ.

Scripture has much to say about just that.

(Hebrews 12:2) Looking on Jesus, the author and finisher of faith.

( Psalms 15:8) I set the Lord always in my sight: for he is at my right hand, that I be not moved.

Something inside me wants to put my confidence in people. Perhaps it's that we need someone we feel we can lean on, depend on, count on, turn to, and trust to always be there for us. Then we discover there are not many like that. People are going to let you down. People will sometimes leave you hanging out to dry and react in ways that are in their own best interest and not yours. I do not say that to be critical of people because I am a people. I say it because, like you perhaps, I have been disappointed, but I must learn to trust the Lord and only the Lord.

( Proverbs 3:5) Have confidence in the Lord with all thy heart .....

The Lord will send the right person in my life for the right moment but I cannot put my trust in them. That is a mistake. I should be grateful for that one who comes into my life at that moment without putting my trust in them. I don't want to live in suspicion but suspicion comes when we have been disappointed by someone we trusted in a way we should only trust the Lord. Who's fault is that? It's mine. If I put my trust in someone and they let me down, I am the one who made the mistake. Losing my confidence in people means that I committed the sin of putting my confidence in people in the first place.

Look we are all a bunch of sinful wretches. There is not a one of us that can be counted on totally. That's just because we are who we are. We're going to disappoint and we are going to be disappointed. There is only one solution. Put your trust in the Lord and no one else.

  • Don't put your trust in your priest. He is human. He will make mistakes.
  • Don't put your trust in your spouse. They will let you down at times. Love them and be grateful for them but put your trust in the Lord.
  • Don't put your trust in your best friend. Next month they may not be your best friend anymore; in fact if you put your trust in them they may not be your friend at all. Put your trust in the Lord and keep your friends.

The bottom line is that I struggle with this because I so desperately want someone I can trust and so do you. But we have Jesus. We have the One who will never forsake us, never leave us, never fail us, never throw us away, never hold a grudge against us, never lie to us, never disappoint us, never betray our trust, and I could go on and on and on and on. Trust in the Lord with all my might. That is what we all must learn to do.

St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, a 17th century French nun, received numerous visions from Jesus in which he urged her to spread devotion to His Sacred Heart.

During one of these, she saw His Sacred Heart. The image described had flames, surrounded by thorns, surmounted by the cross, burning with love so often unrequited for humanity!

It has been said that it is easier to love our Lord than to trust in Him.

When we face our crosses, doubts naturally emerge. Am I doing what is right in God’s eyes? Can I discern the right path ahead in terms of jobs, family, and other such matters when there seem to be so many forks in the road? What about when I get anxious or scared that my crosses will overwhelm me?

This prayer of Trust in our Lord is all the more comforting and powerful in that it goes straight to His Sacred Heart, asking us in effect to turn all our worries over to Him!

The Sacred Heart Prayer

Jesus, I believe in Your personal love for one so sinful and worthless as I am
Heart of Jesus, I put my trust in You.
I believe that Your love for me is from all eternity and that it is as tender as a mother’s love.
Heart of Jesus, I put my trust in You.
I believe that You have lovingly and wisely planned everything that shall ever happen to me.
Heart of Jesus, I put my trust in You.
I will never seek pleasure forbidden by You and will never lose heart in my efforts to be good.
Heart of Jesus, I put my trust in You.
I will accept the crosses of life as I accept its joys, with a grateful heart, and I will always pray, “Your holy will be done in all things.”
Heart of Jesus, I put my trust in You.
I will not be worried or anxious about anything, for I know You will take care of me.
Heart of Jesus, I put my trust in You.
However weak or sinful I may be, I will never doubt Your mercy.
Heart of Jesus, I put my trust in You.
In The Heart of Jesus, I put my trust in You.
all my temptations...
Heart of Jesus, I put my trust in You.
In all my weakness…
Heart of Jesus, I put my trust in You.
In all my sorrows…
Heart of Jesus, I put my trust in You.
In every discouragement…
Heart of Jesus, I put my trust in You.
In all my undertakings…
Heart of Jesus, I put my trust in You.
In life and in death…
Heart of Jesus, I put my trust in You.
Heart of love, I put all my trust in you; for I fear all things from my own weakness, but I hope for all things from Your goodness.

(Psalms 117:8) It is good to confide in the Lord, rather than to have confidence in man.

(Jeremias/Jeremiah 17:5) Thus saith the Lord: Cursed be the man that trusteth in man....

So how about it? You don't trust me and I wont trust you. Together we will trust the Lord!
